My New Dragon Tattoo

My New Dragon Tattoo
My New Dragon Tattoo

Ok so I just got back about an hour ago from a tattoo artist I know and trust. I had been wanting to get a dragon tattoo for some time now on my calf but wasn't really happy with the typical tattoo flash art I had seen. And being a girl I take getting any new tattoo very seriously. I did some research.

First I had to decide what type of dragon. I never realized there was so many variations of a dragon. Throughout recorded history we have written and drawn pictures about dragons. Many of our modern day religions have dragons in their beliefs. Whether these mythical creatures actually existed, were legends passed down from sightings of the last dinosaurs, or were just stories to excite and scare who knows. Anyway I looked two of the standard dragons for my tattoo.

The Girl With the Dragon Tattoo

The Girl With the Dragon Tattoo

It took a few years, but it seems that the book that was a hit in Sweden has become a worldwide sensation. For the record, The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo has no wizards, vampires or lycanthropes. What it does have is the most fascinating character to grace mystery literature in quite a while. Her name is Lisbeth Salander. She is the titular heroine in this tightly plotted and sometimes violent whodunit in what is the first of a trilogy of mysteries from Stieg Larsson.

The mystery opens on journalist Mikael Blomkvist (Michael Nyqvist) being found guilty in a libel suit against Swedish industrial magnate Hans-Erik Wennerström. After the verdict - and to his surprise - Mikael is courted by wealthy patriarch Henrik Vanger (Sven-Bertil Taube) to investigate the disappearance of a teenage girl. The girl was Vanger's niece, Harriet, and she's been missing for over forty years. Disgraced and jobless Mikael takes on the case, which has him relocate to the small island where the disappearance occurred. Tracing his movements is Lisbeth (Noomi Rapace), the investigator who was assigned to do a background check on Mikael on behalf of the Vanger family. Lisbeth is a polarizing character; her standoffish behavior and Goth-inspired attire make her invisible to those who dare look in her general direction. Twenty-four and underdeveloped in areas that men like to ogle, Lisbeth is a basket case of emotions. Working alone on the case, Mikael is good. But when Lisbeth offers assistance, the case takes a dramatic turn. Per his urging, the two work together, weeding through old photographs and documents. Untrusting of others, Lisbeth finds herself growing to trust Mikael, but soon that trust is put to the test as they inch closer to a possible serial murderer.

Among both Asian and Western cultures, there exists a rich diversity among the dragons themselves. For example, Japanese dragons commonly have long "whiskers" projecting from above their mouths and a jewel under their chin, both attributes which are unique to Japanese dragons.

Dragon art tattoos have become popular among many individuals due to their mystical appearance and range of possible of meanings. A common significance associated with dragon art tattoos is guardianship, since Japanese dragons were viewed as the protectors of the imperial family.

This lead to the Chinese dragon becoming a symbol of imperial authority and power. The five toed Chinese dragon was reserved for the emperor alone. Peasants wearing such a symbol would be put to death.

History Of Dragons Tattoos-in Japan

History Of Dragons TattoosHistory Of Dragons Tattoos

Dragons play a central role throughout Japan. In Japanese they are called Ryu or Tatsu. They are large serpent like beasts that are covered with scales. They typically live near large bodies of water and throughout history have come to be respected as a powerful creature. It is such a powerful creature that it is believed the first emprorer of Japan was decended from a dragon and therefore directly from a power god.

Like many of the east Asian countries dragons have a long tradition in Japanese culture, art, architecture and literature. There are numerous stories, temples and shrines where dragons play a central role.

Sculptures of dragons can be seen today throughout Japan typically in alters, temples and other places of woreship. One of the most famous of these temples is at Miyajima also known as The Isle Of The Temple. This has become a famous spot for pilgrims, travelers and toursits to come and pray to the dragons for good luck and good fortune. Dragons are also revered at the Sonsoji Temple in Asakusa Japan.

Each srping the dragon is taken and paraded around the grounds of the Sensoji temple. During this festival thousands of people come from all over Japan to drop coins into a wooden box as a donation and gift to the temple and an offering to the dragon in hopes that the dragon will give them good luck. This festival is done each spring to commemorate the finding of the gold Kannon, an image of the goddess of mercy. It is believed that in 628 AD two brothers were fishing int he Sumida river at the time they discovered this beautiful statue of the Goddess of Mercy Kanon. At the time they discovered this legend states that gold dragons flew up out of the river and in to the sky to celebrate the discovery.

In the Buddhist and even many Taoist traditions the dragon is seen as a mythical beast that represents the hardships that people will have to face and eventually overcome before enlightenment can be obtained.

Dragons are also featured throughout Japanese literary works. One of the first apperances of a dragon like beast is the beast named Yamata-No-Orochi. Yamata No Orochi is a eight headed serpent like beast that devours young women. In the story a man named Susanoo tricks the beast and gets him drunk on Sake and then is able to slay him. In later litrary works dragons are seen as much more benging creatures.
